MINE – Mapping the Interplay between Nature and Economy

The MINE website explores the interplay between nature and the economy. Using fundamental concepts such as time, thermodynamics, evolution, Homo politicus, and justice, it paints a new picture of economic activity in nature. The prevailing approach in economics, which views nature as a subsystem of the economy, is thus replaced by a broader and more integrated framework.
The visual map and the connections between the concepts provide orientation. They allow visitors to approach the content from their own starting points and follow their own discovery paths. Each concept begins with historical context and then moves on to theory and practice.
The research behind MINE began in the 1970s at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, in an interdisciplinary group led by Professor Malte Faber, which included a number of scientists from the fields of economics, mathematics, physics, and philosophy. The research has contributed to the field of ecological economics.

The MINE website was created from 2015 to 2018 by an interdisciplinary and intergenerational project team. Its members include Dr. Dominik Zahrnt, Prof. Malte Faber, Dr. Marc Frick, Johannes Tolk, Caspar Kolster, and Suzanne von Engelhardt.
