Shadow Island I
In 2019, young people launched the competition “Youth Takes Action on Climate Change.” One of the prizes went to a group of youths who applied with the idea of a greened bus stop. The project idea was further developed with the platform, the Department of Construction, and the public works yard, and its feasibility was assessed.

The first event for implementation was a “Design Workshop” in September, where the youths, the platform, a sign maker, and a designer worked together to clean the bus stop, develop slogans (“Shadow Island,” “Insect Drive-In”), and plot them. Subsequently, the bus stop windows were covered with the slogans. During these two days, a strong sense of community, creativity, learning, and open exchanges took place with citizens who passed by the self-chosen construction site.

At a second event, the greened hedge elements were planted, secured, and watered with the help of the public works yard.
The costs were around €3,000. The funds were provided through the prize money from the Bürgerstiftung (Citizens’ Foundation), budget funds, and PLATZ-B. A concept draft for the redesign of bus stops can be downloaded here. Instructions for greening can be found here.
